Bali traffic is not the place to discover you can't ride. We'd rather lose a booking than hand a bike to someone who isn't ready — so this is the honest version, not the one that gets the most rentals.
The path that works: take a lesson, get licensed properly at home (motorcycle licence + IDP), start on the calmest bike, and build up. Canggu has a genuine scooter-lesson scene — professional instructors with hundreds of five-star reviews, bookable on GetYourGuide, Viator and Airbnb Experiences. A two-hour lesson before your first solo ride is the best money a new rider spends in Bali.

What we check, and why it protects you
At handover we verify your motorcycle licence and IDP — not as bureaucracy, but because riding unlicensed can void insurance cover and exposes you at police stops. If your paperwork isn't in order yet, sort that first; the bike will still be here.
Start early in the morning when the roads are quiet, stay off the main strip for the first day, and treat rain as a reason to stop for coffee. The bike has bike insurance with a capped excess and roadside support from early until late behind it — but the best safety feature is a rider who isn't in over their head.
